The Plymouth Summer Festival

The City Centre

Plymouth City Centre has an extensive and award winning programme of free outdoor events right through the summer making it the ideal destination for a family day out combined with some great shopping.

Use the extensive car parking throughout the city centre or take the five minute stroll from Plymouth Train Station or from The Hoe to bring you into the heart of the City Centre, with its wide, pedestrianised thoroughfares and lively outdoor cafes.

Many of our events are centred around the Piazza which is transformed into Plymouth's own centre court between June 22 and July 5 for live Wimbledon coverage on the Plymouth Big Screen - complete with strawberries and cream.

On the 7th and 8th August the Piazza will welcome back the Korean Eagles Demonstration Team who will be sporting several individual Tae Kwon Do World Champions in their visit to the city in preparation for their attempt later this year to retain the World Team Demonstration Title.

The Piazza is again the venue for Plymouth Flavour Fest - the South West's largest food festival - which brings the sights and smells of a bustling Mediterranean-style market right into the heart of the city offering the very finest in local produce.

An extensive programme of entertainment on the Plymouth Big Screen and a range of smaller events and street theatre throughout the Summer Festival means the City Centre is always vibrant, interesting and offers a warm welcome to visitors.

City Centre Shopping

As the region’s premier shopping destination, Plymouth has an unrivalled range of department stores and high street names combined with a thriving and fascinating mixture of independent retailers.

The Drake Circus shopping mall, opened in 2006, is a focal point for retail therapy and compliments perfectly the huge range of top names and long-established department stores in the City Centre.

Make sure you don’t miss a visit to the West End’s Independent Quarter with its collection more than 200 unique shops and traders.

If it’s fish you’re after landed that morning in Plymouth, fruit and veg grown just outside the city, jewellery designed and hand made in the shop by local craftsmen, or just something that little bit special or different, then the Independent Quarter is the place to go.

Make a day of it, relax in one of our many pavement cafés and watch the world go by… and you’re only a short walk from the fabulous vistas from Plymouth Hoe or to the ancient cobbled streets of the Barbican.
